Corfu Travel Information
The
island of Corfu seems to exist between two worlds; one is a garden retreat,
peaceful and serene; the other is a bustling hive of life, awash with
the laughter and music of cafes, tavernas, bars and clubs.
Corfu
Greece
Corfu is known as the Ionian's 'Emerald Isle', its many faces never cease to
surprise. Colourful villages melt into musky olive groves and church
bells sing out to pine-clad mountains in the inland regions.
Golden sand stretches most of the length of the south and west coasts,
while the north and east coasts are more sheltered and pebbles blend
with sands around Gouvia.
The larger resorts or Corfu have a selection of watersports, and the
strong winds on the west coast make fine conditions for experienced
windsurfers. There's plenty to see away from the beach especially in
Corfu Town. Watch an afternoon cricket match from below the arches of
chic Liston Arcade or take an evening stroll around the main square and
admire the medieval churches and forts.
In the lively towns of the south and east, old and new collide in a
vigorous celebration of fair climes and fine wines! Value for money, a
famously hospitable people and a warm relationship with Britain have
made Corfu the most popular of all Greek destinations.

Information
|
Corfu, the northernmost of the Ionian islands, lies as little as
2.5km off the west coast of Albania, near its border with northern
mainland Greece
The island's widest point is in the north, where it is
nearly 32km across. It rapidly narrows and continues southwards for 64km
as a long, narrow strip. The north of the island is mountainous,
dominated by the impressive Mt Pantocrator at 698m. The centre is flat,
with a bleak plain and the remains of evaporated salt lakes. However,
most of the island is very green, with citrus and olive groves in
abundance.
Holiday resorts are spread around the coast but are
particularly plentiful in the east and north east, within relatively
easy reach of the airport near Corfu Town. The island is said to have
some of the best beaches in the Ionian, ranging from pebbly little
coves, through sand and shingle, to sandy bays. The east coast beaches
are not as good, whereas Kavos and Glyfada boast superb, fine, golden
sand.
