Northumberland is characterised by vast white sandy beaches, castles and unspoilt countryside. Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, and accessible only at low tide, is steeped in history and located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Richmond dates from the Norman invasion, where a castle was built on the "strong hill", or riche mont. A town soon grew up around this new fortress on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. We visit the beautiful most northern town of Berwick upon Tweed, once the most fought over area in the UK it has been English and Scottish in its long history and you can still see the subtle hints off battle throughout this town. After this, we head over the causeway to Holy Island for free time to explore the Island and visit the beautiful castle (admission not included). We head out to Alnwick to see this beautiful Northumbria town, we will also visit Alnwick Castle. We also visit the lovely village of Seahouses on the coast for some free time around this picturesque village. Why not watch the boats leaving for Farne Islands in this beautiful setting? Join us as we venture up north to Durham and you will not be disappointed. Durham sits on the banks of the River Wear. It is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the beautiful Romanesque Cathedral and the Norman Durham Castle. The medieval marketplace is one not to miss. Thirsk is a popular tourist destination close to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. It was the home of the author James Herriot and the birthplace of Thomas Lord after whom Lord’s Cricket Ground is named.
